Mad Marlin Lodge: EXOTIC FISHING TRIPS.. Is Guatemala safe?

One of the most frequently asked questions is "Is Guatemala safe?"   The best answer is yes for those coming on a sportfishing vacation but I will do my best to explain why the general answer is yes but how is could be "no" in a few situations based upon a person's attitudes and actions.

Guatemala has a homicide rate of 39 per 100,000 overall but when broken down by location and situation the rate is very low.  Most homicides, just like in the USA occur is known bad areas in a few cities.  Most homicides in Guatemala and other countries are gang or drug related with other locations pretty much as safe as middle american cities.

Comparison rates:  New Orleans (62), Detroit (36), Baltimore (30), Newark (25), Miami (24)

Most other cities and towns have very low homicide rates in both the USA and Guatemala.

There are things that you should consider when coming to Guatemala?

1. Avoid Ghetto areas and other areas with known gang and drug activity.
2. Avoid the local buses that transport mostly locals between major cities.
3.  Stay away from drugs for personal use
4. Do not dress fancy and wear jewelry (real or fake)
5. Keep fancy cell phones stored in your bag or front pocket
6. Keep your wallet in another front pocket
7. Do not display large sums of cash publicly

That is really all there is to it to remain safe in Guatemala.

So what does that mean for our clients who come to fish with us in the sailfish capitol of the world?  It means your safety is priority.  When you arrive at the airport you are met by staff and are transported to the lodge in a private vehicle.   Once at the lodge you are in a secure community with 24/7 security and are as safe as you would be most likely at your own home.  When you are ready to leave at the end of your fishing vacation in Guatemala, our staff will transport you safely to the airport.

I guess it all boils down to using the same common sense that you use when traveling to a US city.
